Cellulose-Based Photothermal Coating: A Sustainable Solution for Seed Protection and Long-Term Grain Storage

Abstract: High-output modern agriculture based on synthetic chemicals (biocides, pesticides, and fertilizers) feeds the growing global population. To completely abandon the use of pesticides and fertilizers will undoubtedly cause a severe food crisis worldwide, and sustainable alternative solutions are urgently demanded to stop biocides and fertilizers overuse. Herein, a versatile and green strategy is proposed for seed protection and long-term storage of grains using a cellulose-based photothermal coating (PDA NPs@Cell… Show more

“…Bacteria and fungi thrive in the right temperature and humidity, and the heat could kill bacteria and fungi. Inspired by the photothermal conversion ability of polydopamine (PDA), a cellulose-based photothermal coating (PDA NPs@Cell-N + ) of seeds has been reported by Ji et al for the long-term storage and seed protection against bacteria and fungi. The coating demonstrated effective photothermal performance under the 808 nm NIR light irradiation (Figure A), resulting in the high elimination of seed-borne diseases, especially the tough Aspergillus flavus (>99% inhibition).…”

“…[ 36 , 40 ] Recently, CNCs were used as a suitable stabilizer in the synthesis of metal nanoparticles in an aqueous medium. [ 40 , 41 , 42 ] Moreover, carboxymethyl cellulose with a high degree of carboxymethyl substitution involves pH‐sensitive interactions with AuNPs and reduced aggregation. [ 43 ] Herein, the dispersion of AuNPs in a CNC aqueous medium (AuNPs/CNC) was prepared by a one‐step method by reducing HAuCl 4 .…”
