Central American mothers report family history of depression and alcohol abuse as a predictor of teenage health risk behaviors

Abstract: There is no consensus on a standard screening approach for depression in teenagers. Developing a standardized approach to gathering information from teenagers that includes genetic family traits may have significant effects on interventions for teenage health risk behavior and ways to provide the best services for vulnerable teenagers. The results of this study have implications for nurse practitioners caring for teenagers.

“…For example, Latino/Latina youth are often exposed to more poverty-related risks, including community violence, residential crowding, and low residential quality, as well as increased acculturation conflicts with parents (Ojeda, Patterson, & Strathdee, 2008; Prado et al, 2009; Pumariega et al, 2005; Wagner, 2003). The clustering of these adversities has been linked to depression in Latino/Latina mothers, and the simultaneous occurrence of these familial, social, and emotional conditions during the adolescence is, in turn, associated with negative developmental trajectories (e.g., Lerner & Galambos, 1998; Maradiegue, 2010).…”

“…[2] These behaviors may cause severe social problems. [3] American Adolescent Health Risk Behavior Monitoring Questionnaire has been used commonly to investigate the health status and health risk behavior of teenagers. Three large-scale surveys aimed at studying the adolescent health risk behaviors of Chinese middle school students have been conducted in 1996, 2005, and 2008, respectively.…”

“…The average age of onset of alcohol consumption is 16, however, in recent years consumption occurs at a younger age (Martínez, Salazar, Pedroza, Ruiz, & Ayala, 2008). This implies a greater likelihood of developing dependence, and so here lies the need to understand the factors associated to the onset and form of alcohol use in this age group (Cadaveira, 2009;Maradiegue, 2010).…”
