Central and Peripheral Fatigue in Recreational Trail Runners: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Background: Understanding fatigue mechanisms is crucial for exercise performance. However, scientific evidence on non-invasive methods for assessing fatigue in trail running competitions is scarce, especially when vertical kilometer trail running races (VK) are considered. The main purpose of this study was to assess the autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity (i.e., central fatigue) and the state of muscle activation (i.e., peripheral fatigue) before and after a VK competition. Methods: A cross-sectional pilo… Show more

“…However, the Tc response to fatiguing exercise yielded more controversial results. It remained constant [43,51], increased [52], decreased [24,47,49], or showed different outcomes depending on the muscle group [48,50].…”

“…In most previous studies, Dm showed a significant decreasing trend, implying muscle fatigue increases tension and stiffness after exercise [24,43,[47][48][49]. Only a few studies showed no changes [50,51]. However, the Tc response to fatiguing exercise yielded more controversial results.…”

“…This power loss could stem from central fatigue (decreased amplitude and frequency of motor unit recruitment) or peripheral fatigue (alterations in potential transmission along the sarcolemma, excitation-contraction coupling and actin-myosin myofilament interaction) [39]. Both types of fatigue might be implicated based on previous findings in ultra-trail running [39][40][41][42][43].…”
