Central corneal thickness and corneal volume changes in eyes with and without pseudoexfoliation after uneventful phacoemulsification

Abstract: Eyes with and without PEX syndrome exhibit similar corneal features before and after phacoemulsification. A surgery in early stages of cataracts in PEX syndrome, not only provides a non-complicated surgery, but also leads to a less damaged cornea similar to eyes without PEX.

“…In Lithuania, PEX prevalence was found to be 47.3% in 76–83-year-old age group, which is slightly higher than a population with similar characteristics in Iceland (40.6% of those who are 80 years old) [ 6 ]. PEX prevalence increased with age in all studies [ 9 , 12 , 13 , 23 , 26 – 29 ] and this is in agreement with our finding, as in our study PEX subjects were older than those without it (72.2 ± 8.1 years vs 68.6 ± 8.2 years, respectively). Similarly to our results, in Turkey the highest PEX rate was in the 80 years old patients (18.4%) with an increased odds ratio of 45.78 (p < 0.01) when compared to the 40–49 age-group [ 23 ].…”

“…Parallel to these, in our study, we found an average increase of 13.1 μ m in the CCT at 1 minute, and we found that it returned to normal after 30 minutes. CCT and CV are used for corneal ectatic disease detection, before refractive surgery, and evaluation of the corneal status and corneal endothelial function [ 19 21 ]. Postoperative elevations of CCT and CV were observed in patients with long phacoemulsification, high power, and complicated cataract surgery, especially in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome, and the risk of corneal decompensation was high in these patients [ 22 24 ].…”

“…On the contrary, Krysik found CCT thicker in PEX group [41]. Many authors report that there is no signi cant difference in CCT between PEX and no-PEX groups [7,37,38,[42][43][44][45].…”
