Central distribution of afferent and efferent components of the pudendal nerve in cat

Abstract: Central distribution of afferent and efferent components of the pudendal nerve was examined in the cat by the HRP method after applying HRP to the central cut end of the pudendal nerve. Retrogradely labeled neuronal cell bodies were located primarily in the feline homologue of the Onuf's X nucleus, constituting a slender longitudinal cell column in the ventral horn of the S1 and S2 cord segments. The Onuf's nucleus was present constantly from middle S1 to high S2 cord segments, and occasionally extended rostra… Show more

“…The BSM originates from the tunica albuginea lateral to the penis corpus spongiosum and terminates on the median septum of the perineum (Schaller, 1992), and it is innervated by the pudendal nerve as it has already been demonstrated in the cat (Martin et al, 1974;Yamamoto et al, 1978;Ueyama et al, 1984;Holstege and Tan, 1987), in the rat (Schrøder, 1980;Katagiri et al, 1986;Mc Kenna and Nadelhaft, 1986), in the monkey (Roppolo et al, 1985), and in the human foetouses (Yucel and Baskin, 2003).…”

“…Somatic and sympathetic innervation of the lower urinary tract arises from somatic motor neurones in Onuf's nucleus (Ueyama et al, 1984;Thor et al, 1989b) and sympathetic preganglionic neurones in the intermediolateral cell column (Morgan et al, 1986), respectively. The somatic and sympathetic innervation is conveyed from the spinal cord to the lower urinary tract via the pudendal and hypogastric nerves, respectively.…”

“…These afferents differ markedly from other populations of pudendal nerve afferents innervating the sex organs as well as cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues of the perineum that terminate in the deeper layers of the dorsal horn (laminae II-IV) (317,639,653).…”
