The zones where tunnels pass through faults are considered to be severely damaged during earthquakes. Site investigation of tunnels crossing faults revealed that there were different types of damage patterns after earthquakes. This article proposed a new seismic design concept of “guiding” and “yielding.” Two types of joints, multilevel brittle-flexible joint and flexible joint, were based on this concept and were investigated in this study. A series of shaking table tests were conducted on reduced scale tunnel models under two steps of the loading process, fault movement and subsequent seismic excitation with increasing intensities. The results showed that both types of joints clearly reduced the seismic responses of the tunnel lining. The idealized behavior—step-like deformation—appeared along the longitudinal direction of the tunnel in the two tests. No shear failure of the tunnel linings was found, and the longitudinal cracks in the crown, arch springing, and invert were common in the tests. The multilevel brittle-flexible joint was verified to be more appropriate for tunnels subject to massive earthquakes.

In this paper, based on the F8 stick-slip fault section of Longxi Tunnel in China, the effect of the anti-breaking measure of rigid-flexible composite (reinforcement of the secondary lining & construction of the reducing dislocation layer between the primary support and the secondary lining) is studied by using the method of indoor model test in order to improve the anti-breaking performance of the tunnel across stick-slip fault in the actual tunnel engineering. The test results show that the anti-breaking effect is limited by adopting structural strengthening measures to resist the influence of stick-slip dislocation on the tunnel structure and the anti-breaking effect is obvious by adopting the measures of reducing dislocation layer only. However, the structural safety of the tunnel with stick-slip fault in the strong seismic intensity area can be greatly improved by adopting the anti-breaking measure of rigid-flexible composite, and the structural safety factor can be significantly improved. The research results of this paper can provide a reference for the anti-breaking design of the tunnel across stick-slip fault in the high seismic intensity area.

Earthquakes of large magnitudes cause fault ruptures propagation in soil layers and lead to interactions with subsurface and surface structures. The emergence of fault ruptures on or adjacent to the position of existing tunnels cause significant damage to the tunnels. The objective of this paper is to study the interaction of an embedded tunnel within a soil layer and the soil deformations imposed upon by normal faulting. A centrifuge modeling under 80-g acceleration was conducted to investigate the rupture propagation pattern for different relative tunnel positions. Compared with the free field condition, due to tunnel and normal fault rupture interactions, focused on soil relative density and tunnel rigidity in this research, found that they can dramatically modify the rupture path depending on the tunnel position relative to the fault tip. The tunnel diverts the rupture path to its sides. This study presents the normal fault-tunnel interaction with the tunnel axis parallel to the normal fault line, to examine the changes that take place in fault rupture plane locations, the vertical displacement of the ground surface with tunnel presence and the effect of tunnel rigidity and soil density on fault tunnel interaction.
