Cephalosporin Utilisation Review and Evaluation

Abstract: The clinical misuse of drugs may result in preventable patient morbidity and mortality, costly remedial care, additional costs for diagnosis and management of iatrogenic disease and unnecessary wastage of healthcare resources. In recognition of this problem, drug utilisation evaluation (DUE) has been recommended as a method for identifying inappropriate or unnecessary drug use and for promoting rational therapy. Growing concern over the widespread misuse of antibiotics, together with the emergence of antimicro… Show more

“…We are aware that studies regarding antibiotic prescribing have been conducted in ambulatory care in Ghana, including self-medication, and there are also published studies monitoring antibiotic use and resistance patterns in Ghana [25][26][27][28][29][30][31]. We are also aware that the evaluation of the use of cephalosporins such as ceftriaxone is well documented in other countries, and has contributed to their prudent use and containing costs [5,[32][33][34].…”

“…In Australasia drug expenditure accounts for approximately 6% of the total hospital budget [2]. Antibiotic use accounts for 20%-40% of the total pharmacy budget [7][8][9][10][11], with cephalosporins often being the most expensive group of antibiotics used [9][10][11][12][13]. Ceftriaxone and cefotaxime are two effective and safe third-generation cephalosporins with similar activity against a wide range of pathogenic organisms [14,15].…”
