Ceramic components for high pressure gasoline fuel injection pumps

Abstract: In the present project the use of ceramic materials in piston-cylinder-systems of high pressure pumps for gasoline direct injection is investigated. The aim is to generate injection pressures of 300 bar with low friction and wear despite of gasoline's poor lubricity and low viscosity. The high resistance of ceramic materials against wear is used to realise these aims.

“…This term is assessed considering the width (d) and depth (W L ) of each track. The wear rate of the specimens (W R ) was then calculated as follows: (2) where F N the normal force and s the sliding distance. Worn surfaces were characterized by SEM to analyze the role played by the SiC fibers during the tribological response of the Cr 2 AlC/SiC composites.…”

“…air-foil bearings, cylinders, gears, gas turbine seals, protection systems and rotational parts in engines. Metallic and/or superalloy compounds are the most used materials due to their excellent mechanical response [1], although they are limited by their tribological and mechanical capabilities at high temperature [2] [3]. On the other hand, advanced ceramic materials such as SiC, Si 3 N 4 , Al 2 O 3 or ZrB 2 , have been typically used under high temperature, harsh environments and high wear conditions, but their inherent low fracture toughness and poor damage resistance have reduced their use in mechanical applications.…”

“…In this sense, for instance, the use of gasoline direct injection in automobiles has become a solution to enhance the fuel efficiency, reducing, at the same time, the harmful emissions to the atmosphere 1 . However, the high injection pressures required, above 30 MPa, for these systems, accompanied by the poor lubricating conditions of gasoline, provoke extensive friction and wear of the metallic sliding components 2 . To overcome these problems, advanced ceramic materials can be an excellent choice.…”

“…4 gives an overview about different high quality surfaces of pistons from Al 2 O 3 and SSiC, which are used in a test rig with the functions of a fuel injection pump [11]. One aim of these tests was to study the influence of the surface conditions on the tribological behaviour of the system.…”
