Ceramic Cracks Segmentation with Deep Learning

Abstract: Cracks are pathologies whose appearance in ceramic tiles can cause various types of scratches due to the coating system losing water tightness and impermeability functions. Besides, the detachment of a ceramic plate, exposing the building structure, can still reach people who move around the building. Manual inspection is the most common method for this problem. However, it depends on the knowledge and experience of those who perform the analysis and demands a long time to map the entire area and high cost. Th… Show more

“…There are limitations such as inspection distance or, as observed, orthomosaics and 3D reconstruction processing is not precise to identify pathological manifestations. In this sense, recent works show that UAV may be integrated into thermal imaging cameras (Rakha and Gorodetsky, 2018) and used with deep learning techniques to automate and give greater reliability to UAV use for facade inspection (Chen et al , 2021; Junior et al , 2021).…”

“…Moreover, a lot of cracks and loss of the glaze layer were detected. Cracks in the glaze can lead to the loss of the layer's properties and may facilitate the penetration of liquids, resulting in severe damage of the faience [26]. Additionally, crystallized salts were detected on the backside of the statuette.…”
