Cereal Technology Interventions for the West African Semi‐Arid Tropics

Abstract: One of the regions of most concern in Sub‐Saharan Africa is the geographical area of the West African semi‐arid tropics (WASAT) where there has been little impact from the green revolution and most of the region suffers from inadequate and irregular rainfall and low fertility soils. Decreasing per‐capita food production trends and 2‐3% per‐year population growth trends have convinced some to adopt a Malthusian perspective about the future of the WASAT. This paper evaluates the prospects of agricultural technol… Show more

“…However, the evidence suggests that the impact of many of these strategies is highly site-specific dependent on rainfall, soil type and current soil fertility status (Giller et al, 2009;Rusinamhodzi et al, 2011). Further, the benefit of many of these technologies, including those in conservation agriculture, often accrue the most benefits and exceed risk when used in combination, though doing so requires significant initial investment in knowledge and capital -which is usually limiting for smallholder farmers (Nagy et al, 1988).…”

“…Crop growth models responsive to and tested for the key environment, crops and management factors of the Sudan Savanna may be a helpful tool for their evaluation (Kpongor, 2007;Gaiser et al, 2010). Finally, irrespective of their potential to improve food security, farmers' ability to adopt new technologies will necessitate significant policy and institutional support (Nagy et al, 1988).…”

“…The low external input approach of the former is a recognition of the limited ability of resource-poor farmers to take on loans to purchase inputs and their unwillingness to expose themselves to greater risk by increasing their production costs in the context of an unpredictable rainfall regime and an uncertain production environment. The IFAD approach is similar to that advocated by Nagy et al (1988) in that it envisages a package of concurrent changes promoted by means of improved access to credit.…”
