Cerebral venous thrombosis presenting like a subdural hemorrhage at magnetic resonance imaging: An Italian case report

Abstract: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is responsible for 1–2% of all strokes in adults. Venous occlusive disease is a less common condition than the arterial one, but probably underestimated in the past [1]. Its early detection is crucial to ensure appropriate therapy, to prevent irreversible brain injury. The neuroradiological study is crucial to formulate the diagnosis.Unenhanced computed tomography (CT) is usually the first imaging study performed on an emergency basis. We report the case of a woman who pr… Show more

“…reported a case of sphenoparietal sinus thrombosis found in a 38-year-old Italian woman with no identifiable risk factors. [ 8 ] The patient presented with a week-long history of medication-resistant headache and was initially misdiagnosed with primary subdural hemorrhage. [ 8 ] Following thrombus identification on MR venography, the patient was treated with low-molecular-weight heparin and discharged after an uncomplicated 10-day hospital stay.…”

“…While CVT is extremely diverse, one of the clinical syndromes usually produces: (1) intracranial pressure (headache, papilledema, and visual perturbation), (2) focal neurological condition (focal and seizure impairments) or (3) encephalopathy [2,3,4]. Because of many of these non-specific manifestations, clinical suspicion of the diagnosis requires confirming neuroimager with MRI or CT/CT venogram [3,5].…”

“…Cerebral vein and dural sinus thrombosis is less common than most other types of stroke, being responsible for 1% to 2% of all strokes in adults. 1 It has diverse clinical and imaging features, risk factors, and variable outcomes. 2 Furthermore, data on natural history, management and prognosis is limited when compared with arterial stroke.…”
