Cerium and nitrogen doped CoP nanorod arrays for hydrogen evolution in all pH conditions

Abstract: Cerium and nitrogen co-doped CoP nanorod arrays on carbon fiber cloth were developed as pH-universal HER electrocatalyst with the low overpotentials of 66 mV, 72 mV, and 41 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1 M PBS, and 1 M KOH, respectively.

“…29 After the phosphorization process, the diffraction peaks observed at 31.7°, 36.4° and 48.2° can be attributed to the (011), (111) and (211) planes of CoP (PDF# 29-0497). 34 The peaks at 40.8°, 41.0° and 56.3° belong to the (121), (201) and (320) planes of Co 2 P (PDF# 32-0306). 35 However, the characteristic peaks of Mn are not observed in the product of the Mn–Co precursor and Mn–Co–P which may be due to the low content or the poor crystallinity of Mn.…”

“…2e) core level shows a peak at 129.89 eV, which is ascribed to metal phosphide. 34 Meanwhile, the large peak at 133.49 eV is likely derived from the surface oxidation of samples exposed to air. 44 This is supported by the O 1s spectrum (Fig.…”

“…5 However, zinc anodes in aqueous electrolytes inevitably encounter zinc dendrite growth and inevitable side reactions, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), chemical corrosion, and continuous deposit of passivating byproduct Zn 4 SO 4 (OH) 6 •xH 2 O. 6,7 These problems deteriorate the zinc plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency (CE) and cycling stability of zinc-ion batteries. 8 Hence, strategies must be devised to enhance the reversibility and durability of zinc anodes to facilitate the largescale commercialization of AZIBs.…”

“…Among them, cerium (Ce) is abundant and exhibits high oxygen-storage capacity with a "Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox pair", which can enhance the reversible surface oxygen ion exchange and increase the electronic/ionic conductivity. [56][57][58][59] Therefore, the combination of rare earth elements and transition metals may be an effective way to improve the electrocatalytic performance of materials for OER and HER.…”
