Certification of Superconducting Solenoid-Based Focusing Lenses

Abstract: Abstract-The first production focusing lens for the HINS beam line at Fermilab has been assembled into a cryostat and tested. A total of 5 devices will be tested before they are installed in the low energy section of the HINS beam line, which uses copper Crossbar-H (CH) style RF cavities. One of the tested CHsection lens assemblies includes a pair of weak orthogonal steering dipoles nested within a strong focusing solenoid, and has six vapor cooled power leads. The other device has only the strong focusing sol… Show more

“…Furthermore, it is not yet completely clear how the magnetic axis found this way relates to the behavior of charged particles moving through the lens. Studies of the lens optical properties based upon particle tracking and simulation of the wire techniques [19] suggest these axes may differ at the level of 100 µm. An alternative approach using Hall probes to find the coil magnetic centers may yield complementary information to the wire technique, and is presently under study at Fermilab [20].…”

“…The voltage induced in the transducer is then acquired and integrated digitally in order to yield the flux linkage as a function of the linear position, measured by a laser interferometer. In the literature, the methods to align solenoids can be grouped in three main categories 17 : (i) the single stretched-wire methods 18 , 19 , (ii) the vibrating-wire methods 20 – 22 and (iii) the Hall transducer-based methods 15 , 23 .…”
