Ceruminous gland adenocarcinoma.A light and electron microscopic study

Abstract: Tumors of ceruminous gland origin in the external auditory canal are rare in man. A case is described in which such a tumor presented as an invasive vascular temporal bone neoplasm, mimicking a glomus jugulare tumor. Light and electron microscopic study of this tumor confirmed a diagnosis of ceruminous gland adenocarcinoma. Tumors of ceruminous gland origin appear to have a distinctive clinical behavior by virtue of their unique anatomical location in the external auditory canal. Our experience with this case … Show more

“…Apocrine adenocarcinomas of the skin are rare (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). They occur mainly in the axillae (1)(2)(3)(4)(5), but occasionally also in other areas where apocrine or modified apocrine glands normally are present (7)(8)(9), and rarely even in areas usually lacking these glands (6). Apocrine carcinomas can also arise in the breast (10)(11)(12)(13).…”

“…The endolymphatic sac tumor [36], neuroendocrine adenoma of the middle ear [37], middle ear adenocarcinoma, and ceruminous adenoma [35] have been much more completely described and refined. Critical review of many of the earlier case reports of ceruminous neoplasms allow for a more accurate placement in different tumor categories [2, 8, 15, 1928]. Careful review of the remaining cases, most of which are single case reports or limited case series, further narrows the number of cases available for review (see Table 2) [4, 5, 10, 12, 14, 1618, 2932, 3866].…”

“…However, many cases were excluded if the lesion arose primarily in the middle ear, endolymphatic sac region, or represented a neuroendocrine adenoma (middle ear adenoma), or a primary salivary gland (parotid) tumor or extended into the ear from a tumor “centered” in the oral cavity, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, sinuses, or soft tissues of the neck were excluded [2, 8, 15, 1928]. …”
