Cervical artery dissection—an easily neglected cause of stroke: a case report

Abstract: Background In recent years, the incidence of stroke has gradually increased in young people. There are many reasons causing stroke, including atherosclerosis, artery embolization, and cervical artery dissection and so on. However, cervical artery dissection is a major cause of stroke in young people. We present a case of ischemic stroke caused by dissection, whose distal vascular occlusion due to detachment of the thrombosis in the right internal carotid artery. Case presentation A 33-year-old male patient wa… Show more

“…However, this classic triad is found in less than one-third of affected patients, and only approximately one-fifth of patients develop ischemic stroke with no warning signs. 2,6 Neither of our patients had the typical clinical symptom of pain. In Case 1, the symptoms were mainly those of ischemic stroke, while in Case 2, the symptoms were mainly decreased vision with intermittent mild headache.…”

“…Spontaneous intracranial dissection is a risk factor for acute ischemic stroke [1,2]. Arterial dissection is often accompanied by arterial wall hematoma and thrombosis, which usually result in stroke in children and young adults [3].…”

“…To date there are no definitive guidelines for the optimal treatment of ischemic stroke resulting from thrombosis of cerebral artery dissection. The treatment and diagnosis of cerebral artery dissection thrombosis depends on limited literature [1,[4][5][6]. Traditional treatment includes surgery and endovascular surgery to block the dissection.…”

“…4) Arrhythmogenic right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC): In this condition, fatty fibrous tissue replaces normal heart tissue, causing abnormal heart rhythms. Stroke may occur due to a blood clot reaching the brain as a result of a tear in the wall of the large blood vessel (in the neck), which is known as a dissection of the cervical artery [14]. Bicuspid aortic valve diseases could be classified into two classes:…”
