Cervical Cancer Screening of Adolescents Should Not Be Encouraged

Abstract: The natural history of HPV infection shows it is transient in young women, with most cases regressing within 2 years of presentation. Our data confirm that screening of adolescents is not recommended because serious cytological abnormalities and cancer are rare in this group.

“…The prevalence of cytological abnormalities in our sample was 8.9%, slightly higher than the Israeli rates (4.78%), a study published in 2014 (Bassal et al, 2014) and the data collected at public hospital in Brazil, which was 5% (Henrique et al, 2017). The most prevalent cytological alterations in our total population were: ASC-US with 6.5% of the total (73.19% of the altered cytologies), LSIL with 1.82% (20.50% of the altered cytologies), ASC-H with 0.24% (2.69% of the altered cytologies), HSIL with 0.18% (2.03% of the altered cytologies) and AGC with 0.13% (1.48% of the altered cytologies).…”

“…in a comprehensive study by the Turkish Cervical Cancer and Cervical Cytology research group, the abnormal cytology prevalence rate in women of all ages was 1.8% 9 . Additionally, a 9% to 19% prevalence rate of abnormal cytology in adolescents and young adults has been reported in previous studies 10,11 . These higher rates of cytologic abnormalities as compared with adult population can be explained by the increased hPv infection rate at these ages.…”
