Cetacean community off French Guiana

Abstract: Although human activities are developing in French Guiana Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and surrounding countries, knowledge on diversity and ecology of cetaceans in the region is scarce. This study aimed to collect new information on the cetacean species occurring year-round in the entire French Guiana EEZ by combining visual and acoustic data obtained from three boat-based campaigns conducted by local NGOs. The GEPOG campaign was conducted from July 2011 to June 2012, four days every two months; the COHABYS … Show more

“…The little-explored steep edges of the Demerara Plateau may well offer an important habitat for deep-diving beaked whales, such as M. europaeus, but further research is needed to study the habitat-use of these elusive beaked whales. This is especially important in the light of the recent increase in oil and gas exploitation activities within Suriname and elsewhere within the Guiana Basin (Guyana and French Guiana), and these activities have been identified as a threat to key biodiversity areas in French Guiana (Pusineri et al 2021). We emphasize that more systematic at-sea surveys, photo-identification, and behavioural studies are needed to assess the status of all cetaceans and to develop effective regionally and nationally specific conservation measures, not only in Suriname waters but within the Guiana Basin as a whole.…”

“…Only royal tern breeds locally in the northern Gulf [4]. Recent vessel-based surveys in the tropical waters of French Guiana also observed high taxonomic diversity of seabirds, with species from local colonies and migrant species co-occurring in the same area [94]. The significant migratory component of the seabirds occurring in the nGoM may reflect the importance of sub-tropical and tropical waters to migratory and locally breeding species.…”
