CFD analysis of the angle of attack for a vertical axis wind turbine blade

Abstract: The Angle of Attack (AOA) of the Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) blades has a dominant role in the generation of the aerodynamic forces and the power generation of the turbine. However, there is a significant uncertainty in determining the blade AOAs during operation due to the very complex flow structures and this limits the turbine design optimization. The paper proposes a fast and accurate method for the calculation of the constantly changing AOA based on the velocity flow field data at two reference po… Show more

“…They studied the effects of a flat plate deflector placed upwind of the vertical wind turbine. Elsakka et al (2019) have found a method to calculate and store the local angle of attack for VAWT over the entire cycle from CFD. These authors examined the distribution of the local angle of attack of the NACA 0015 airfoil blade.…”

“…The conclusion of the analysis was the enhancement of the complete performance of the VAWT when variable pitch was used. It gave vitals for the usage of variable pitch in VAWT [10]. The researcher depends on the BEM hypothesis for the HAWT configuration, considering the impact of the wake on the rotor plane in the general structure.…”

“…5 The design method and theory of tidal current turbine mainly comes from horizontal axis wind turbine. 7,13, 14 Gao et al 15,16 adapted CFD method to optimize bidirectional flow passage components and lateral inlet/outlet diffusion part of a pumped hydroelectric storage. [7][8][9][10] The BEM theory is modified by taking the tip loss and hub loss into account after the study by Prandtl.…”

“…As an effective simulation tool, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) which are based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, are then performed to evaluate the performance of the rotor both at transient and steady state. 7,13,14 Gao et al 15,16 adapted CFD method to optimize bidirectional flow passage components and lateral inlet/outlet diffusion part of a pumped hydroelectric storage. The BEM-CFD method is an enhanced actuator disk and is able to reduce the computational cost by simulating a time-averaged downstream velocity field.…”
