CFD Approaches for Modeling Gas-Solids Multiphase Flows - A Review

Abstract: This review study focuses on the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in the investigation of gas-solids multiphase flow systems. The applicability and limitations of conventional models and recent developments of existing multiphase models for the prediction of gas-solids flows are thoroughly overviewed. Use of conventional Eulerian-Eulerian model for granular flows and Lagrangian approach incorporated with Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) are quite well proven, however some limitations restrict… Show more

“…In order to take into consideration the high turbulence arising from the flow fluctuation (gas vortices), especially near the separator, the above momentum equations have been coupled with the standard two-equation k –ε model with wall function as proposed by Launder and Spalding . This model is widely used and reported to provide reasonable agreement with experimental measurements in various forms of intermediate to dilute flow systems such as circulating fluidized beds and pneumatic conveyers. Compared to other optional models available in Fluent simulation platform, the k –ε model has also been found to be computationally stable and robust for the scale of problem considered here.…”

“…Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling is an advanced tool to study the various aspects of pneumatic conveying characteristics [2]. Different model approaches are available for the prediction of gas-solids multi-phase flow systems and the Euler-Granular method is one of those model approaches [3]. This model is an Eulerian-Eulerian approach where the both gas and solid phases are treated as continua.…”
