CFD-Based Validation Study on the Fire Prevention Wisdom of Ancient Village Houses in Western Hunan

Abstract: Ancient villages are precious architectural treasures that have been protected from fire hazards for centuries through traditional fire prevention strategies. However, research on traditional fire response strategies is limited, with existing studies mainly focusing on climate response strategies, conservation, and renewal. No prior research has revealed the quantitative fire response strategies used for ancient buildings. This paper takes the first ancient village in western Hunan, High-Chair village, as an e… Show more

“…Fire protection research for traditional villages and buildings is currently focused on the following four aspects: First, fire risk assessment research [13,14] mainly identifies potential or existing fire risks of target objects using field research and provides assessment levels using hierarchical analysis, fuzzy analysis, and accident tree analysis [15], and corresponding fire protection optimization strategies are finally proposed in a targeted manner. Secondly, numerical simulation research of fires [16][17][18] mainly adopts the FDS software (https://pages.nist.gov/fds-smv/downloads.html) simulation method to establish a traditional village or building numerical model so that it can be employed to study the changes in flame plume, smoke spread, and heat radiation conditions during a fire. This method dramatically reduces the cost of fire research and provides high experimental safety and economy.…”

“…For example, in image recognition, they are used for face recognition and medical image recognition [14], and in natural language processing, they can be used for translation and language generation [15]. Recently, fire investigators adopted CFD simulations to aid their work in predicting and analysing the spread of smoke and hot gases generated by a fire [16]. Delémont and Martin [17] applied CFD simulations for a fire forensic investigation of a gallery after a fire, in which they assumed there were two possible fire scenarios with different fire source locations and powers.…”
