CFD Modeling and Simulation of Superheated Steam Fluidized Bed Drying Process

Abstract: International audienceAn unsteady mathematical model of superheated steam fluidized bed drying process is established based on the transport process principles and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The vapor-solid two-phase turbulent flow in the drying chamber is described with the Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase model. The model is solved by computer numerical simulation. The drying experiments of wet rapeseeds are conducted in a normal atmosphere. The experimental results agreeing well with the simulat… Show more

“…This method was also used in simulating the drying of pistachios, tea leaves, soybean and many other foods [42][43][44][45][46]. In addition, Xiao et al (2012) developed a CFD model and performed a simulation of superheated steam fluidized bed drying process [47]. In addition, CFD has also found application in simulating the drying of by-products from distillation operations [48].…”

“…A very acceptable agreement between the simulated and measured results was achieved. Additionally, Xiao et al (2012) performed CFD modeling, simulation, and experiments on the drying characteristics of rapeseed using a superheated steam FB dryer. The simulated drying curve obtained from the drying model was in good agreement with the experimental results.…”

“…They have used the thickness of carrot chips as 2.35–2.65 mm, radius of chips with 9.85–10.15 mm and operated air temperature of 313, 323, and 333 K with velocity of 2.5 and 15.5 m/s (Hu et al, ). Xiao, Zhang, Wu, and Liu () have performed CFD modeling, simulation and drying of rapeseeds using fluidized bed dryer with superheated steam. They have given operating parameters as inlet steam temperature of 423 K with pressure 1.01 × 10 5 Pa and from the reports it has been observed that three periods namely condensation, constant and falling rate periods in drying curves exist for both experimental and simulation (Xiao et al, ) work.…”
