“…In our retrograde tracing studies we focused only on male mice to avoid estrous cycles as a confounding factor in gene expression (Mónica Brauer and Smith, 2015). Since neurogenic bladder and bladder pain syndromes occur more frequently and with greater severity in women than men, sex-specific variation in gene expression may be a contributing factor to these differences (Irwin et al, 2006; Chrysanthopoulou and Doumouchtsis, 2014; Mónica Brauer and Smith, 2015). It will be of interest in subsequent studies to investigate sex differences in Htr3a gene expression patterns throughout development or into adulthood.…”

“…The prevalence of IC/PBS is thought to be markedly higher (100–300/100,000 women) than in previous years 3 . Frequency, urgency and pain during bladder filling are the most commonly reported symptoms of IC/BPS 4 .…”

“…[110][111][112] Comorbidity with other chronic pelvic pain disorders occurs in up to 40% of IC/PBS patients, 1,2,67,73,113 and a significant proportion of patients also suffer from fibromyalgia, allergies, and mood disorders. 34,72,[114][115][116] Like many idiopathic pain disorders, IC/PBS is polysyndromic and patients may exhibit one of multiple subtypes. Classically, IC referred to observable findings on cystoscopic examinations: namely, glomerulations, overt histopathology, or Hunner's ulcers 110,111 ; however, the patient population was far more heterogeneous than the strict criteria used by research qualifications.…”
