Challenges and prospects for weed management in Pakistan: A review

Abstract: Weed management has become increasingly important in the backdrop of sustainable crop production, uncertain climatic patterns and food security concerns in Pakistan. Due to diverse agro-climatic conditions, 267 weed species have been identified to be responsible for causing monetary loss worth 3 billion USD annually. Weed competition for resources, interference with crops, weed-related increased incidence of pests and diseases in different crops, and high management costs incurred in controlling weeds make wee… Show more

“…In every cropping system, weeds present multidimensional problems, competing for water, space, nutrients, and sunlight that negatively affect crop production [ 5 ]. The most severe impact among all is the loss of quality and quantity of the final product [ 6 ]. Weeds not only harbor pathogens and insects that infect crop plants, but they also damage native habitats, eventually threatening native animals and plants [ 7 ].…”

“…The process may include targeted and site-specific weed control, selection of weed seeds, different herbicide application (depending on weed distribution, spatial arrangement and soil properties), destruction of weed seeds over predation and microbial loss, nano herbicides, and optical spraying techniques. Advanced vision-guided robotics that can be adopted for site-specific weed management (SSWM) are transgenic herbicide-resistant crops, weed control and spraying robots, decision support systems, and pattern recognition modelling [33]. Implementing these technologies will help prevent unwanted species and improve existing weed management systems [34].…”

“…Weeds are the main factors, responsible for the low production of crops (Hussain et al, 2020). Hence, weed management is very important in sustainable agriculture for integrated weed management based on production that is environmental friendly and economical (Matloob et al, 2019;Aziz et al, 2021).…”
