Purpose This study aims to discuss the impact of the physical environment on the quality of distance education from the viewpoint of a number of teaching staff in Jordanian universities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach A total of 308 lecturers were selected using a snowball sampling method from different social media websites. The researcher used a descriptive analysis method by conducting social surveys. Findings The results reveal that there is a negative impact of the physical environment on the quality of distance education from the perspective of the teaching staff in Jordanian universities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results also show that there are statistically significant differences between males and females in terms of the quality of distance education in favor of males. In addition, there are no statistically significant differences in the quality of distance education based on the place from which the lecture is given and the faculty type. Practical implications The study recommends improving teaching staff’s performance in the teaching process, boosting their comfort level and reducing stress and anxiety which may be caused by the surrounding physical environment during distance education. Originality/value The topic of the study is of great significance to quality assurance in education, i.e. online learning and teaching.

The traditional techniques of English language teaching (ELT) have been replaced by more modern strategies that focus on a language's relevance and actuality. The English for Specific Purpose (ESP) is the result of this search and the need for cutting-edge trends. The goal of ESP is to provide topic understanding while also preparing students to function well in a certain scenario. The purpose of this study is to look into the difficulties and barriers that exist in University of Sindh, Jamshoro, when teaching English for Science. This research provides an analysis of ESP's history as well as effective teaching strategies for ESP courses. Data from 20 English language teachers who have been teaching English have been gathered using a quantitative research methodology. This study looks into the obstacles impacting teachers' performance in public institutions that use e-learning with the goal of making recommendations that are in line with sustainable development. Among the suggestions include making investments in technological infrastructure, working with developers and legislators, and giving technology integration varying degrees of priority based on global needs. These recommendations seek to advance high-quality, inclusive education by utilizing technology to achieve better results. Universities can help ensure that education is accessible to all and empower students in the digital era by removing these obstacles. Collaborative efforts and strategic investments are essential to promoting lifelong learning and educational justice.

There remains a dearth of answers to certain inquiries regarding oral English presentations, despite the growing interest in this field in recent years. The current study examined Thai university students’ perspectives on their English presentation abilities, the difficulties they encounter when delivering English presentations in an online environment, and their preferred mode of presentation. They enrolled in a 12‐week online course on English presentation and communication skills through the Zoom application. This study employed a qualitative methodology and utilized reflective writing from students in response to four open‐ended questions that prompted respondents to consider their experiences. A thematic approach was applied to the reflective essays to identify recurring themes and patterns within the data. The findings of the analysis indicated that, overall, the students expressed the need for enhancement in their English presentation abilities. Furthermore, this research emphasized several challenges that students confronted when delivering online presentations, encompassing nonverbal communication, anxiety, the audience’s engagement, and addressing questions. Despite the apparent convenience of online presentations, they conveyed a preference for face‐to‐face presentations. Interaction, teacher and peer support, and a desire to become a professional presenter were the three factors that affected their preference. This study establishes a fundamental basis for subsequent investigations and proposes strategies that higher education instructors can implement to enhance their students’ English presentation skills.
