Challenges in large-scale bioinformatics projects

Abstract: Biological and biomedical research is increasingly conducted in large, interdisciplinary collaborations to address problems with significant societal impact, such as reducing antibiotic resistance, identifying disease sub-types, and identifying genes that control for drought tolerance in plants. Many of these projects are data driven and involve the collection and analysis of biological data at a large-scale. As a result, life-science projects, which are frequently diverse, large and geographically dispersed, … Show more

“…These programs may develop student interest in this emerging and interdisciplinary field, filling an urgent need for more researchers in vetinformatics. The major challenges faced by vetinformatics include managing big data in veterinary sciences; developing species-specific databases and tools for livestock research; improving the accuracy of available tools; developing novel algorithms and tools; analyzing and integrating multiomics data; and identifying molecules for the development of drugs for treating livestock diseases (43,44).…”

“…Another tool, WEBGIVI, facilitates gene enrichment analysis and visualization but does not handle RNA-seq data [10]. Notwithstanding the utility of RAP and WEBGIVI, the lack of a unified toolkit may be due to a host of challenges, including difficult-to-maintain workflows, requiring extensive and heterogeneous compute resources, demanding proficiency in cloud infrastructure engineering, and file system management and performant networking, resulting in a high barrier to entry for conducting RNA-seq and DGE analysis [12, 13].…”
