English language learning is pegged on four core skills namely writing, reading, listening and speaking. Acquisition of language springs from the latter; verbal skills (listening & speaking) and ignite the learning process in totality. Teaching of oral skills is barred by hurdles like ineffective delivery strategies. This study investigates instructional strategies utilized in development of oral skills. Descriptive survey, as a research design, was adopted. The study was grounded on Constructivism Learning Theory. The target population consisted of 37 public primary schools in Embu-West, 37 language panel chairpersons, 67 grade 3 classes and 67 grade 3 teachers of English. The study sample was chosen using stratified and simple random sampling methods. The sample consisted of 10 schools, 10 grade 3 classes, 10 language panel chairpersons and 10 grade 3 teachers. For data collection, teacher questionnaires, language panel chairpersons interview schedule, classroom observation guide and focus group discussion for learners were used. Quantitative data was analyzed descriptively using SPSS version 25.0 and presented in form of tables and percentages whereas qualitative data was analyzed thematically and presented narratively. Results revealed that storytelling, pair work, communication games, group work, role-play and songs among others form the major strategies in the teaching of oral skills. The results led to the conclusion that storytelling, pair work, songs and role-play form the common strategies used in development of oral skills. The study recommends that teachers adopt use of these interactive strategies and motivate learners to practice and develop interest in learning of oral skills among others. These findings may be beneficial to both curriculum developers and implementers for effective teaching and learning.

This study aims to examine and describe the strategies used by English language teachers in teaching young learners, specifically at Kumon School in Makassar Indonesia. The methods applied in this study are peer observations, and interview methods. The results showed that based on the fifteen principles of teaching English to young learners, the three teachers successfully conducted the fourteen of the principles. The last principle examined was inapplicable in the institution. This study also revealed that the main obstacle in teaching young learners at this institution were; the unequal number of students for each classroom at the same levels, students grouping especially in competitive activities and teachers preferences on teaching aids and facilities. The research is concluded that to ensure the successful teaching and learning process at the early stage or young learners, particularly at this English institution, the continuous teacher training programs; pre-service and in-service are one of the key element. Furthermore, teachers’ creativity of using and selecting teaching strategies in teaching young learners and school’s supports in the form of classroom facilities and teaching materials

Addressing Issues of Learner Diversity in English Language Education

The aim of this study is to investigate the current perceptions of English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher to very young learners in two contexts: Russia and Spain. Despite the increase of EFL teaching in early childhood, there is a gap in understanding the needs and concerns of EFL teachers to very young learners. An online distributed questionnaire was designed to collect data from 49 teachers from Spain and Russia. The findings show that most perceptions are shared between teachers of both countries. Among other methodologies, the participants highlight games and other play-oriented tasks, as well as the usefulness of the L1 for the students. Also, the results reveal that teachers face multiple challenges: lack of time, appropriate teaching materials for very young learners, pressure to complete the syllabus, and heterogeneity. In sum, the beliefs and concerns of teachers of EFL to very young learners are common across borders.
