Challenges in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Aneurysmal Bone Cyst in Patients with Unusual Features

Abstract: Objectives. Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign but locally aggressive tumor. It has several challenging features. The aim of this study is to identify challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of ABC especially in patients with unusual features. Methods. This retrospective study involved medical record review of primary ABC patients with one or more of the following features: unusual clinical presentation with a mass or a pathological fracture especially at an unusual age, rare locations, radiological find… Show more

“…Solitary cysts are often discovered right after trauma as pathological fractures and are most common in proximal humerus and femur [11]. In aneurismal cysts we usually find intralesionals trabeculae and fluid-fluid levels [12]. Fibrous cortical defects have similar radiological aspect to our case, but are very rarely seen in upper limbs [13].…”

“…In the literature, the recurrence rate of secondary aneurysmal bone cyst is reported to be high [32]. In addition, secondary aneurysmal bone cysts usually occur secondary to giant cell tumor, osteoblastoma, or chondroblastoma and not much has been known about the recurrence after therapeutic approach in SBC with aneurysmal bone cyst [29].…”

A malignant transformation is described in rare cases.…”
