Analyses of human skeletal shape and geometry are used to investigate questions related to habitual activities and physical lifeways, as well as biological distance and relatedness. Recently, these methods have been applied to research concerning human evolutionary predisposition for disease, as well as functional experiences of pathological conditions. The use of these methods to address palaeopathological questions are relatively new, but related questions and approaches are gaining momentum. This manuscript provides an in‐depth review of the current state of this palaeopathological research by undertaking a meta‐analysis of anthropological literature. From the results of the meta‐analysis, we observe an increase in the use of quantitative shape analyses in palaeopathology, and identify four key themes in this literature: (1) description and diagnosis, (2) shapes that increase pathological risk, (3) shape change that arises from pathology, and (4) shape used for social insight. As this area of study develops, we recommend adaptations to measurement and data collection; comparative examinations of remains at the individual, population, and species levels; and, when possible, representation of all human variation through the inclusion of pathological individuals in geometric analyses. Palaeopathologists are ideally suited to investigate the relationship between bone shape and health, which may prove essential to the continued understanding of disease in both past and contemporary contexts.

Notre étude a pour objectif d'étudier le profil pathologique des individus inhumés en silos au Second âge du Fer pour apporter une meilleure compréhension des risques sanitaires et des stress auxquels ils ont été soumis et, à travers cela, mettre en évidence de possibles critères de sélection. Nous avons fait le choix de nous limiter au nordouest francilien. Pour cela, nous avons réalisé un examen paléopathologique systématique en déterminant préalablement des indicateurs pathologiques correspondant à des troubles physiologiques dont la localisation osseuse est accessible à l'anthropologue et l'étiologie acceptée, et nous avons mis en place une méthodologie sous la forme d'une grille de lecture pouvant être, à terme, réutilisée ultérieurement pour d'autres contextes et ainsi permettre des comparaisons à grande échelle. Les résultats mettent en évidence une forte proportion de lésions traumatiques antemortem, une prévalence élevée de cas évoquant une atteinte tuberculeuse, ainsi que la présence d'impotence fonctionnelle, décrite à partir de critères ostéologiques précis. La prévalence élevée des lésions infectieuses, et particulièrement de la tuberculose, malgré le risque d'aléa diagnostic, reste nettement supérieure à celle attendue dans le cadre d'un recrutement naturel et nous permet d'évoquer l'hypothèse d'une sélection particulière d'individus qui méritera d'être confirmée sur une plus grande échelle. Si les critères de sélections n'apparaissent pas clairement au cours de ce travail, l'étude de la pathologie semble avoir une place particulière pour les approcher. Cette approche pathocénosique des inhumés en silos, pour le Second âge du Fer, qui nous a permis de tester une méthodologie, est une étape préliminaire à un travail de plus grande envergure.
