“…Berner et al (2021) made similar interpretations for a Roman individual from Halbturn, Austria, who was also thought to have acquired poliomyelitis in childhood. Berner et al's (2021) study thoroughly integrated quantitative shape analyses, using measures such as cross‐sectional area, shape, and section modulus, combined with histomorphometry and entheseal scores to characterize the mosaic pattern of loading present in this individual. In most cases, the authors found that their levels of asymmetry fell within the normal ranges established using the comparative samples.…”

“…Sparacello et al (2016) took innovative steps to quantify external bone geometry and suggested that tuberculosis may have interrupted periosteal bone apposition during ontogeny. Much like Berner et al's (2021) work, the use of CSG in this manner holds great potential for interpreting possible age at onset and therefore can provide greater insight into the epidemiology of some conditions in the past. Building on this, Mansukoski and Sparacello's (2018) article used CSG methods to investigate the effect of tuberculosis in a documented Finnish sample and found reduced diaphyseal areas in most individuals who died of tuberculosis.…”
