Family caregiving is a growing phenomenon with the increased prevalence of chronic illness and shorter hospitalizations. Rare diseases pose significant challenges not only to patients living with these kinds of pathologies but also to those who care for these patients. The caregiving role has specific characteristics. The present work aims to increase knowledge of the challenges that are common or specific to fathers and mothers of children diagnosed with a rare disease. Moreover, the paper analyses the kinds of social support they experience according to gender. A descriptive study was conducted using grounded theory methodology. A semi-structured interview with open-ended questions was conducted with 15 parents of children with a rare disease. The interview was organized into three main areas: personal experiences in caring for a child with a rare disease, family changes and perceived social support. The transcriptions were analyzed using NVivo 11 software. From data analysis, themes emerged regarding the challenges shared by fathers and mothers, but some aspects also emerged that were gender-specific. The analyses of differences between mothers’ and fathers’ narratives showed that there is a specific experience of the impact that caregiving has on parents’ relationships with their jobs and on their worries. Self-help group is the main source of social support for all respondents. We discuss these findings in relation to possible appropriate specific interventions and support for family caregiving.

Drivers of Subjective Well-Being Under Different Economic Scenarios

This paper explores the evolution of the driving forces that shape individual subjective well-being (SWB) in Spain from 2013 to 2018. Several socio-demographic, material conditions and quality of life (QoL) variables are considered as potential drivers of SWB. The data come from a large survey carried in two different time periods. The first one (2013) is characterized by a negative economic scenario as a result of the global financial crisis of 2008. The second one (2018) is characterized by fast economic recovery. Our results suggest that the material conditions variables, especially unemployment, have a much deeper impact on SWB during economic downturns than during economic recovery periods. Social connections and health status are determinant factors behind SWB, especially if the economy is working well. Our results also point to changes in gender effects. While women were happier than men in 2013, this effect disappears in 2018. Paradoxically, this suggest an increase in female expectations about their own lives during this period.

Resumo Este artigo tem como finalidade explorar as contribuições da C&SC para os estudos sobre gênero e saúde. Para tanto, foi realizado um mapeamento por meio da plataforma da revista no SciELO, utilizando os unitermos gênero, homem/homens, mulher/mulheres, jovem/jovens, adolescente/adolescentes. Foram selecionados 164 artigos, categorizados em função do ano de publicação, tipo de estudo, população estudada, temas abordados e método. A análise do material aponta a contribuição da revista ao propor temas que favorecem análises na perspectiva de gênero. Algumas produções traduzem discussões atuais. Entretanto, o pequeno número de artigos sobre gênero nos ciclos de vida e desde uma abordagem interseccional sugere que a postura proativa da revista deve ser mantida para estimular análises de gênero em outros temas que não a saúde sexual e reprodutiva, as masculinidades e a violência de gênero contra mulheres.
