Chance-constrained optimal location of damping control actuators under wind power variability

Abstract: This paper proposes a new probabilistic energybased method to determine the optimal installation location of electronically-interfaced resources (EIRs) considering dynamic reinforcement under wind variability in systems with high penetration of wind power. The oscillation energy and total action are used to compare the dynamic performance for different EIR locations. A linear approximation of the total action critically reduces the computational time from hours to minutes. Simulating an IEEE-39 bus system with… Show more

“…Consider an equivalent problem where the switching variables q k ∈ {0, 1} are relaxed and allowed to vary in R. By using this continuous variable now, q k ∈ R, the problem can be solved by a first order Taylor expansion of S ∞ -which has shown to be adequate [31]-around an initial switching condition q k0 :…”

“…In order to avoid arbitrary objective functions as in the optimization-based procedures, we have previously used the concept of oscillation energy [28], [29] and a new dynamic performance measure called total action (TA) [30], [31]. To not rely on targeted modes and to offer adaptability to changing conditions, we are now proposing an adaptive coordination that works on top of the traditional decentralized control; through this coordination, decentralized controllers are not required for a global-wide parameter re-turning.…”
