Change of cognitive functions after stroke with rehabilitation systems

Abstract: The objective of this study is to assess and compare the effect of applying a computerised cognitive training programme and virtual environment rehabilitation system on cognitive functions in patients after a stroke. Methods. A controlled trial included 121 persons referred to second stage rehabilitation. The subjects were differentiated into three impact groups by a single blinded trial. Results. The trial revealed that cognitive functions improved in all patient groups (p<0.001). A paired comparison analy… Show more

“…Sample sizes ranged from 18 to 145, for a total of 894 patients with stroke. In total, 11 (47.8%) of the 23 trials were conducted in Korea [34,38,[42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50], 3 (13%) in Portugal [51][52][53], 2 (8.7%) in Spain [54,55], 2 in China [36,37], 2 in Australia [56,57], and 1 (4.3%) each in Lithuania [58], Brazil [59] and Turkey [60].…”

“…Regarding the types of VR-based therapies, 16 (69.6%) trials administered VR as a singular session [36][37][38]44,45,[47][48][49]51,52,[54][55][56][57]59,60], 5 (21.7%) trials were categorized as having used VR-based therapies plus occupational therapy [43,46,50,53,58], and 2 trials as having used VR-based therapies plus computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation [34,42]. The frequency and duration of VR exposure varied considerably between trials.…”

“…Family support and self-efficacy have been individually identified in a small number of studies as factors affecting cognitive function in stroke patients, but neither have been verified with respect to the mediating effects of factors that can maximize patients' internal factors [9,10]. Studies of these factors can help develop effective nursing interventions for disease treatment by identifying various applicable surrounding support factors and by strengthening the internal factors of individuals required for the long-term treatment of stroke patients [11]. In this study, we therefore aimed to provide basic data to identify the degree of self-efficacy and cognitive function of stroke patients and empirically verified the mediating effect of family support on the relationship between self-efficacy and cognitive function.…”
