Changes in cognitive flexibility and hypothesis search across human life history from childhood to adolescence to adulthood

Abstract: How was the evolution of our unique biological life history related to distinctive human developments in cognition and culture? We suggest that the extended human childhood and adolescence allows a balance between exploration and exploitation, between wider and narrower hypothesis search, and between innovation and imitation in cultural learning. In particular, different developmental periods may be associated with different learning strategies. This relation between biology and culture was probably coevolutio… Show more

“…However, Lancy's claim is at odds with research in Western and non‐Western (indeed, Kalahari) children showing how strongly they also imitate and overimitate adult actions. Recent experimental work contrasting the ability of individuals at different ages, from toddler to adult, to engage with novel solutions in the physical domain also strongly supports the claim that as individuals mature they actually become less flexible . Indeed, Lancy also specifically remarks that complex tools such as the bow and arrow are often manufactured by specialists, even in contemporary foraging societies.…”

“…How the metaphor plays out should become obvious. Gopnik et al (2017) explore problem solving across different life history stages using a simple experimental paradigm. The underlying thought is that H. sapiens' distinctive long childhood might serve to facilitate an individual's adaptation to the various environments it might be confronted with.…”

“…Other, complementary contributions in the present collection focus on more specific topics, including the active role that children come to play in recognizing their ignorance, as well as their knowledge, and systematically seek information to remedy this (73); the ways in which related hypothesis testing changes through the long period of human development in relation to the stage of cognitive development and socio-ecological context (74); and the significance of language as both a product and medium of culture, illustrated by the linguistic labels and generics that provide special forms of both the transmission fidelity and affordance for innovation that permit cumulative culture (75).…”
