Changes in cuff pressure of endotracheal tube during laparoscopic and open abdominal surgery

Abstract: This study indicates that the CO(2) pneumoperitoneum and Trendelenburg position used during laparoscopy increase endotracheal cuff pressure and lead to discomfort in the postoperative patient. Measurement of endotracheal cuff pressure is a simple and inexpensive procedure and should be applied in patients under going laparoscopic surgery.

“…Yildirim et al had found the cuff pressure elevation and a higher incidence of postoperative sore throat in the laparoscopic than open cholecystectomy that was compatible to our findings [16]. The differences between their report and our findings are that they did not analyze the position effect and correlations of cuff pressure to body mass index and intra-abdominal pressure.…”

“…4 An increase in the ETT cuff pressure is associated with increased postoperative complications such as postoperative sore throat and hoarseness. 2,5,6 The intracuff pressure can be affected by various factors, including environmental factors (e.g., intraoperative use of high airway pressure and nitrous oxide), patient factors (e.g., differences in the size of the trachea and the position of the intratracheal cuff), and cuffrelated factors (e.g., differences in cuff compliance and diameter). [7][8][9][10] Positional change and neck movement after intubation can displace an ETT in a patient's trachea.…”
