Changes in Microbial Diversity, Methanogenesis and Fermentation Characteristics in the Rumen in Response to Medicinal Plant Extracts

Abstract: This study evaluated the in vitro effect of medicinal plant extracts on ruminal methanogenesis, four different groups of methanogens and ruminal fermentation characteristics. A fistulated Holstein cow was used as a donor of rumen fluid. Licorice and mugwort extracts (Glycyrrhiza uralensis and Artemisia capillaris, 0.5% and 1% of total substrate DM, respectively), previously used as folk remedies, were added to an in vitro fermentation incubated with buffered-rumen fluid. Total gas production in Glycyrrhiza ura… Show more

“…These by-products were chosen primarily because of the rapid increase in their production, and their relatively high content of nutrients and bio-active compounds ( Wallace, 2007 ; Acevedo et al, 2013 ). It was expected that the bio-active phenolic compounds contained in these by-products would modulate rumen microbial activity, fermentation characteristics, and CH 4 emission ( Acevedo et al, 2013 ; Kim et al, 2013 ). Fermentation of selected by-products using Lactobacillus spp.…”

“…Возможно, снижение метаногенеза происходит и в результате изменения в популяциях метаногенных бактерий в рубцовой жидкости. Ранее обнаружено, что экстракт A. capillaris уменьшал выделение метана на 14 % (р < 0,05) после 48 ч инкубации при снижении численности сообществ метаногенов (инфузории и популяции метанобактерий) (53). Аналогичный эффект наблюдался под влиянием смеси эфирных масел и карбоната кобальта (16).…”
