Changes in oxidative stress levels during two weeks of smoking cessation treatment and their association with nutritional characteristics in Japanese smokers

Abstract: Although several experimental studies have reported that oxidative stress levels decrease during smoking cessation, how they change among general smokers has yet to be completely elucidated. In the present study, a total of 23 smokers who underwent smoking cessation treatment were observed for two-week changes in their levels of 8-OHdG and 8-isoprostane. Physical and nutritional characteristics were measured at the initial patient visit, and casual urine samples were collected at the initial visit and at a fol… Show more

“…Damage can be caused by direct effects of cigarette smoke and activation of ROS-producing phagocytic cells. [32][33][34] A number of cross-sectional studies have demostrated that the risk of periodontal disease existance is greater in smokers. [35][36][37][38] It is possible to OS may play an important role in the interaction between periodantitis and smoking.…”

“…We collected the following clinicopathological factors for all the patients enrolled in this study: age, gender, tumor site, HPV‐L1 status, clinical stage (T, N, stage based on UICC 8th edition), Brinkman index of 200 as smoking behavior, irradiation dose and combination chemotherapy (Table ). The 40 specimens of the training set were collected during biopsies performed before treatment, immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at −80°C.…”

“…We measured urinary 8-OHdG and 8-isoprostane concentrations using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/ MS) following solid-phase extraction (Inaba et al, 2011;Oba et al, 2019). Urine was processed with a C18 solid-phase extraction cartridge (YMC Co., Ltd., Kyoto, Japan) for both 8-OHdG and 8-isoprostane.…”
