Changes in Patterns of Seasonality Shown by Migratory Fish under Global Warming: Evidence from Catch Data of Taiwan’s Coastal Fisheries

Abstract: Abstract:In this study, we analyzed the fish species composition data of coastal capture fisheries in Taiwan between 1963 and 2010. The purpose of the analysis was to understand the long-term changes in marine ecosystems. A ratio-to-moving average method was used in conjunction with adjusted seasonal indices to determine the seasonality of individual catch items and to examine the trends shown by the species with the same seasonality. Over the 48-year timespan of the data, 31 species, i.e., 64% of the total nu… Show more

“…Moonfish capture in Taiwan has transitioned over the years, with a greater contribution in recent times (Figures 3 and S1). While declining effort may explain the drop in moonfish catch after 2017, the CPUE maintains a consistent upward trajectory, in line with Ho et al's (2016) findings that species seasonality impacts catch proportions. Changes in the STW region's SST patterns, influenced by the KC, contribute to variations in moonfish catch, with a notable peak during winter seasons, potentially reflecting shifts in species composition over time (Lu & Lee, 2014).…”

“…The NEC, KC, and subtropical counter-current are the major ocean currents in the northwest Pacific that have undergone changes in recent decades compared with previously observed patterns [10][11][12]. For example, the KC has been warming approximately twice as fast as it did in the 19th century, with its main axis that extends to the East China Sea shifting gradually onshore [11,13]. As two other examples, the bifurcation of the NEC has begun to latitudinally shift southward over the past six decades, while the intensity of the KSBC extending from the Luzon Strait (LS) to the South China Sea (SCS) has gradually weakened over the past two decades [13,14].…”

“…Seasonal changes in the catch rates and marine environmental conditions of fishing grounds in the TS can be determined using remote sensing data and using daily catch data and data from vessel recorders, which are operated on Taiwanese fishing vessels. Catch rates and the variability of fish population structures are affected by climate-related oceanographic environmental conditions (Ho et al, 2016). The variability of the spatial distribution patterns of the greater amberjack may be mostly influenced by the current system in the TS.…”
