"flatoxins are a group of naturally occurring carcinogens that are known to contaminate different human and animal food stuffs. "flatoxins are poisonous by-products from soil-borne fungus Aspergillus, which is responsible for the decomposition of plant materials [ -]. The occurrence of aflatoxins foods and food products vary with geographic location, agricultural and agronomic practices. The susceptibility of food product to fungal attack occurs during pre-harvest, transportation, storage, and processing of the foods [ , , , , , ]. The problem of aflatoxin contamination of the food products is a common problem in tropical and subtropical regions of the world especially in the developing countries such as the sub-Saharan countries with poor practices and where the environmental conditions of warm temperatures and humidity favors the growth fungi [ , , , , , ]. The various food products contaminated with aflatoxins include cereals like maize, sorghum, pearl millet, rice and wheat oilseeds such as groundnut, soybean, sunflower and cotton spices like chillies, black pepper, coriander, turmeric and zinger tree nuts such as almonds, pistachio, walnuts and coconut and milk and milk products [ ]. The aflatoxins were initially isolated and identified as the causative agent in Turkey X disease that caused necrosis of the liver in and over , turkeys died in England and US" and the death was attributed to the consumption of a mould-contaminated peanut meal [ , , , , ]. Very high concentrations of aflatoxins are most often found in nutritive seeds such as maize, nuts and cereal grains in "frica and rice in China and Southeast "sia [ , , , -].

Aflatoxin B1 is a common contaminant of poultry feeds in tropical and subtropical climates. Research during the last five decades has well established the negative effects of the mycotoxin on health of poultry. However, the last ten years of relevant data have accentuated the potential of low levels of aflatoxin B1 to deteriorate broiler performance. In this regard, any attempt to establish a dose-effect relationship between aflatoxin B1 level and broiler performance is also complicated due to differences in types of broilers and length of exposure to the mycotoxin in different studies. Contrary to the prevalent notion regarding literature saturation with respect to aflatoxicosis of chicken, many areas of aflatoxicosis still need to be explored. Literature regarding effects of the mycotoxin on the gastrointestinal tract in this regard is particular scanty and non-conclusive. In addition to these issues, the metabolism of aflatoxin B1 and recently proposed hypotheses regarding biphasic effects of the mycotoxin in broilers are briefly discussed.

Lung Carcinoids (L-CDs) are uncommon low-grade neuroendocrine tumours that are only recently becoming characterised at the molecular level. Notably data on the molecular events that precipitate altered gene expression programmes are very limited. Here we have identified two discrete L-CD subtypes from transcriptomic and whole-genome DNA methylation data, and comprehensively defined their molecular profiles using Whole-Exome Sequencing (WES) and Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) genotyping. Subtype (Group) 1 features upregulation of neuronal markers (L-CD-NeU) and is characterised by focal spindle cell morphology, peripheral location (71%), high mutational load (P=3.4x10-4), recurrent copy number alterations and is enriched for Atypical Lung Carcinoids. Group 2 (L-CD-PanC) are centrally located and feature upregulation of pancreatic and metabolic pathway genes concordant with promoter hypomethylation of beta cell and genes related to insulin secretion (P<1x10-6). L-CD-NeU tumours harbour mutations in chromatin remodelling and in SWI/SNF complex members, while L-CD-PanC tumours show aflatoxin mutational signatures and significant DNA methylation loss genome-wide, particularly enriched in repetitive elements (P<2.2 x 10-16). Our findings provide novel insights into the distinct mechanisms of epigenetic dysregulation in these lung malignancies, potentially opening new avenues for biomarker selection and treatment in L-CD patients.
