Changes in the Oral Moisture and the Amount of Microorganisms in Saliva and Tongue Coating after Oral Ingestion Resumption: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Background and Objective:Tube feeding has been significantly associated with a higher rate of aspiration pneumonia that is mainly related to oral microorganisms and a reduced salivary flow. Thus, the difference in the mode of nutritional intake is expected to affect the oral environment, but this has not yet been fully clarified. The purpose of this study was to investigate, in tube-fed patients, changes in the oral moisture and the counts of microorganisms in saliva and tongue coating, which occur after oral … Show more

“…The importance of oral care instruction and provision by OHPs in long‐term care facilities is widely recognized . In addition, the role of OHPs in dysphagia screening and rehabilitation is increasing, as indicated by the results of this study. This reflects the increasing demand for OHP‐provided services, which has led to a gradual increase in the number of facility‐employed OHPs, especially during the years since establishment of the “oral health management system” and “oral health management” benefits, in 2009 and 2012, respectively.…”

“…Research into tongue coating began in China and is very popular in Asia today. 22 Primary and most recent studies also use this parameter for an early diagnosis of some diseases, including osteoporosis. Association of this parameter with patients with osteoporosis is scarce in the literature, but tongue coating has been associated with patients' predisposition to diseases, such as cancer 23 and cardiopulmonary disease.…”
