Changes in the spatial spread of attention with ageing

Abstract: Spatial attention is a necessary cognitive process, allowing for the direction of limited capacity resources to varying locations in the visual field for improved visual processing. Thus, understanding how ageing influences these processes is vital. The current study explored the relationship between the spatial spread of attention and healthy ageing using an inhibition of return task to tap visual attention processing. This task allowed us to measure the spatial distribution of inhibition, and thus acted as a… Show more

“…While the Posner paradigm was designed to measure the influence of shifts of attention, it has since been adapted to measure group differences in attentional spread (e.g. Wilson et al, 2016;Lawrence et al, 2018). In order to do so, the spread of attentional inhibition around a cued location is mapped by measuring response times for targets appearing at varying distances from the cue (Figure 4).…”

“…In contrast, spatial attention scaling is a measure of whether an observer distributes attention narrowly or broadly across a region when minimal task demands are imposed (e.g. Bennett & Pratt, 2001;LaBerge, 1983;Lawrence et al, 2018).…”

“…Instead, it is likely that unfilled shapes provide spatial structure to a visual scene, which can alter the region over which attention is deployed (e.g. Egly & Homa, 1984;Jefferies and Di Lollo, 2015;Lawrence et al, 2018;Taylor et al, 2015). For example, Jefferies…”

“…Inhibition of return is a process or mechanism by which processing of recently detected stimuli are suppressed, which thereby may make attentional resources available for processing novel stimuli. The increase in Page 19 of 21 position priming in older subjects can then be explained by a loss of inhibitory control with age (Lawrence, Edwards and Goodhew, 2018). This results in decreased inhibition of return, making it is easier to orient to a target repeated at the same position.…”
