“…However, this difference did not reach the level of significance (p= 0.451) because of the high standard variation. In contrast, significantly elevated iron staining in the red pulp of spleens were found in sows fed a Fusarium-contaminated diet of 4.42 mg DON/kg and 9.6 mg DON/kg for 35 days at the second (Tiemann et al 2008a) and last third of gestation (Tiemann et al 2008b), respectively. Feeding gilts DONcontaminated diets up to 9.6 mg/kg for 35 days resulted in a higher presence of hemosiderin particles in spleen and inhibition of ConA-stimulated proliferation rate of splenocytes ).…”

“…The question why the DON release by the osmotic minipump was not as expected cannot be solved from the present results. However, the solubility and stability of DON in DMSO, water, PBS, and NaCl-solution under physiological conditions was proven several times in different cell cultures (Goyarts et al 2006a, b;Tiemann et al 2006Tiemann et al , 2008b. To the authors' knowledge, only one experiment (Prelusky 1997) has been conducted with pigs (10-13 kg bw, 6 weeks) implanted intraperitoneally with an osmotic pump (Alzet Model 1007D, 0.5 µL/h) filled with an aqueous solution of DON, resulting in an intraperitoneal DON dose of 2 µg DON/h (low dose, 48 µg/day, 3.7-4.8 µg/kg bw/day) and 5 µg DON/h (high dose, 120 µg/day, 9.2-12.0 µg/kg bw/day).…”

“…ZEN is a xenoestrogen and a non-steroidal agonist for estrogen receptors which affects cell proliferation (Coffey 2001, Tiemann et al 2008. In pigs and probably in humans, ZEN is quickly absorbed after oral administration and it is metabolized by intestinal cells.…”

“…Besides these effects, reproductive alterations have been observed in humans and pigs (Hussein and Brasel 2001;Alm et al 2006;Tiemann and Da¨nicke 2007). The data reported herein were collected in the context of a large study analysing the transfer of DON and ZON from sows to their foetuses during pregnancy and their influence on physiological parameters in sows and foetuses/piglets Goyarts et al 2007;Tiemann et al 2008). Feeding pregnant sows with a Fusarium toxin contaminated triticale diet (4.42 mg DON and 0.048 mg ZON kg À1 diet) in the period from day 35 to 70 of gestation, DON, ZON and their metabolites were detected foetally on day 70 ), but neither the live weight of sows nor the foetus weight was significantly reduced.…”
