Changes in the Tangent Modulus of Rabbit Septal and Auricular Cartilage Following Electromechanical Reshaping

Abstract: Transforming decades' old methodology, electromechanical reshaping (EMR) may someday replace traditionally destructive surgical techniques with a less invasive means of cartilage reshaping for reconstructive and esthetic facial surgery. Electromechanical reshaping is essentially accomplished through the application of voltage to a mechanically deformed cartilage specimen. While the capacity of the method for effective reshaping has been consistently shown, its associated effects on cartilage mechanical propert… Show more

“…11-17 One in vivo study 18 of EMR has been published, which demonstrated the feasibility of creating shape change without cutaneous tissue injury or significant adverse consequences. In the present study, a broader range of dosimetry parameters was examined to understand shape change dependence on electrical parameters.…”

“…Furthermore, other studies 4,8,20,28,29 have used EMR to mimic procedures that emulate the classic cut and suture operation ex vivo and in vivo. Unfortunately, unlike EMR studies 1,6,7,12,19,20,2326 in cartilage, quantifying the mechanical effects of ECT on skin is not tractable.…”

“…In contrast to the cartilage cutter, EMR is still an experimental technology where electrodes connected to a simple DC power supply are inserted into tissue to create in situ redox reactions that lead to accelerated stress relaxation and shape change. 2030 The technique is straightforward, time efficient, and easy to sterilize. It is cost effective, as it can be accomplished using just AA batteries and low cost electrodes.…”

“…The electrodes were connected to terminals of a DC power supply (Model PPS-2322, Amrel, Arcadia, CA, USA), and dosimetry of 5 V for 3 minutes was applied. 2030 The electrodes were then removed, and the tissue and mandrel (with needles in place) were placed in PBS for 15 minutes to allow for rehydration and stabilization of shape. No other cartilage segments were reshaped using EMR.…”
