“…Yard trimmings compost normally contains 500 to 600 g OM kg -1 , thus amendment with this material would allow the addition of large amounts of stable OM to the soil ash. Addition of compost to soils with low OM has been reported to increase soil organic C, (Leita et al 1999) cation exchange capacity (Gupta et al 1986;Epstein et al 1976), decrease bulk density (Tester 1990;Avnimelech and Cohen 1988), increase water holding capacity (Epstein et al 1976), and increase microbial populations (Press 1996;Pera et al 1983), microbial biomass (Perucci 1990;Smith and Paul 1990) and microbial activity (Leita et al 1999;Hoitink et al 1993), as well as enzyme activity (Fortun et al 1997;Perucci 1990). Compost addition has also been reported to decrease pH of saline alkaline soils (Bevacqua and Mellano 1994;Patcharapreecha 1990), and increase leaching of soluble salts from saline soils (Avnimelech et al 1994).…”
