Changes of HIV burden globally and in China over three decades: a secondary analysis of global HIV statistics

Abstract: Background: A more comprehensive understanding of the trends of incidence, prevalence, and mortality in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and their complex interrelationships, may provide important evidence for decision-making related to HIV prevention and control. The variances in these indices between different population groups, genders, and ages are critical to decipher evolving patterns of the HIV epidemic in specific populations. Methods: A secondary analysis of… Show more

“…These measures have played a crucial role in significantly reducing new HIV infections in China, with a notable decrease from 4.8 to 2.2 per 100 000 between 2005 and 2019. 8 Furthermore, China has made significant progress towards achieving the '95-95-95' targets, which aim for 95% awareness among HIV-positive individuals, 95% treatment coverage and 95% viral suppression. Currently, the country has reached 86%, 76% and 71% of these targets, respectively, indicating substantial advancements in the HIV/AIDS response.…”

“…Acquired human immunodeficiency disease (AIDS), caused by HIV infection, results in partial or complete loss of immune function, rendering individuals susceptible to various opportunistic infections or tumors ( 3 , 4 ). Though the number of novel infections per year has decreased recently in China, the annual number of new infections has increased in other regions including Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and North Africa ( 5 ). Advances in medical technology have significantly prolonged the survival of patients with HIV, increasing the risk of developing malignant tumors, and an increasing proportion of patients with HIV/AIDS have been diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).…”

“…In 2014, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) introduced the "90-90-90" goals, and the notable achievements in meeting these targets have propelled the adoption of a more ambitious vision to attain the "95-95-95" testing and treatment objectives by 2025 across all demographic groups, while sustaining the ongoing progress in testing and ART scale-up. [ 3 ] To attain this ambitious objective, cART plays a crucial role.…”
