“…The different aptitude to induce the antioxidant mechanisms exhibited by both P.sativum cultivars can be ascribed to their different ability to take up Fe: in fact the antioxidant response is particularly expressed in Kelvedon when grown in the presence of bicarbonate, in which Fe is supplied, although scarcely available (ID), while in the absence of Fe (DD) the two cultivar exhibit a more similar behaviour. On the other hand, the better aptitude to grow under Fe-limiting conditions exhibited by Kelvedon plants can be partly ascribed to its effective antioxidant response itself, which limits the damages derived from Fe starvation; from this point of view the antioxidant response could be considered as an integral part of the complex adaptive response conferring to Kelvedon its high tolerance to lime-induced Fe deficiency, assessed both in the field [1] and in hydroponics [25,41].…”
