Changing Role of Users—Innovating Responsibly in Digital Health

Abstract: Despite the recognition of the importance of stakeholder inclusion into decisions about new solutions offered to society, responsible innovation (RI) has stalled at the point of articulating a process of governance with a strongly normative loading, without clear practical guidelines toward implementation practices. The principles of RI direct us to involve the user early in the innovation process. However, it lacks direction of how to involve users and stakeholders into this process. In this article, we try t… Show more

“…If the participant with autism had not reached out to the research team to provide feedback, they likely would have been missed from the randomly-selected subset of participants for interview. Deliberate efforts are needed to include diverse perspectives through the digital health development and evaluation process 47 to ensure that different needs are understood and accounted for. For instance, digital equity and accessibility issues could be facilitated by including a brief question in pre-surgical assessments to determine whether patients are willing and able to receive the automated call and by delivering digital services in multiple languages.…”

“…Additionally, considering that some implications of innovation practices may be controversial, innovators, decision makers, and regulators should carefully consider the relevant audience's concerns, insights, and feedback to shape, modify, and restrain innovation, which supports mutually responsive relations in the innovation practices [65,99]. This responsive relationship would assist different stakeholders in reaching a consensus on potential conflicts in the context of the complex and dynamic embedding of technology in society [57,100,101].…”
