Changing Structure and Sustainable Development for China’s Hog Sector

Abstract: Supply shortages and competitive disadvantages are the main problems faced by China's hog sector. The non-essential import of pork products, triggered by competitive disadvantages, poses great challenges to hog farms. Structural changes are an important policy concern in China and elsewhere. Previous literature has ignored whether the ongoing structural changes from backyard to large farms can contribute to sustainable development. This study adopts the micro-level data of hog farms collected from Jiangsu Prov… Show more

“…Some studies in this field that applied a metafrontier approach refer to China. In particular, Zhang et al [27] analyzed pork production. One piece of work exists that refers to pork production in EU member states [28], but this application used the metafrontier approach to examine total factor productivity, not efficiency.…”

“…Öhlund et al [4] advocated using public procurement as a driving force to promote more sustainable pork production to solve or cope with the contradictory goals in pig raising. Zhang et al [5] used microscopic data collected from pig farms in Jiangsu Province, using a two-step meta-frontal model and original system methods. They came to the following conclusion: the ongoing structural changes can promote the growth of China's pig industry output and also help reduce production costs and improve the competitiveness of the Chinese pig industry.…”

“…In the PMC model, binary 0 and 1 are used to set the value of secondary variables. When the policy meets the conditions, the score is 1; when the policy does not meet the conditions, the score is 0, as shown in Equation (5). Secondly, the second-level variable is weighted to obtain the value of its corresponding first-level variable, as shown in Equation (6).…”

“…Both Cobb–Douglas form and Translog form are widely used as the specific form of the production function in empirical studies 32 , 37 . This paper uses the translog functional form because this form is very flexible and it’s a second-order approximation of any production technology 10 , 32 .…”
