“…Having this option saved them petrol costs, parking costs and time. Much of the Aotearoa NZ and overseas literature reports that multiparous women do not prioritise accessing early antenatal care for reasons similar to those raised in the current study -time restraints, prioritising the needs of other family/whānau members, and financial limitations (Corbett et al, 2013;Dixon et al, 2013;Haddrill et al, 2014;Hatherall et al, 2016;Ratima & Crengle, 2013). All the women in our study had pressured, busy lives which impacted their ability to access midwifery care.…”

Early antenatal care may be protective against perinatal mortality due to timely screening and lifestyle advice (Dixon et al, 2014). Women who register later in pregnancy are more likely to be living with other risk factors for perinatal mortality.…”

“…3 Māori hapū māmā are less likely than non-Māori hapū māmā to be registered with an LMC in the first trimester of pregnancy. 4 The PMMRC has documented frequent barriers to the access and provision of care for Māori whānau (Māori families), which breach the health sector's obligations to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. 1 Primary health care plays an essential role in connecting hapū māmā to LMCs early in pregnancy and achieving equity for Māori hapū māmā.…”
