Abstract-Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are endearing to researchers in view of their outspread application capacity in the multifarious domain such as object detection and tracking, industrial automation, environmental monitoring, smart home, and tactical system [1]. Typically, a WSN comprises of enormous low-cost and small sensor nodes which are deployed in an intended region to acquire data of interest. However, poor sensing range of a node evolves compact network, hence developing a dynamic Medium-Access Control (MAC) protocol is predominant. So far, a great number of MAC protocols have been presented with different ideas for wireless sensor networks. Initially, researchers' prime consideration was energy efficiency. In the recent past, researchers have given priority to design a protocol that supports multitasking while being adaptive to traffic loads. In this paper, an attempt has been made to survey the numerous Primitive and Schedule-Based MAC protocols. At first, the properties of wireless sensors paramount for the design of MAC layer protocols are summarized. Then, the Primitive MAC protocols and Scheduled-Based MAC protocols are discussed, and finally, their advantages and disadvantages are emphasized. INTRODUCTION TO WSNs MAC Great progress in technology has emanated the evolution of small, inexpensive sensor nodes which are embedded with various sections like sensing, processing, and communication. The vast application scope has been encouraged by sensor nodes through wireless sensor networking [2][3]. The pivotal aspect of WSN protocol design is to enhance energy efficiency, considering the sensor nodes which are required to work independently with smaller batteries while boosting sensor node lifespan. Since each node comprises of a transceiver that communicates with other nodes, battery span plays an important role in node health. Since the WSN are expected to work efficiently with minimal human intervention, it is highly desired to design a protocol that produces very little bottlenecks. Medium access control is a subsection of the data link layer which is the most widely considered layer for the accurate functioning of any communication system. The fundamental work of MAC is to organize transmission and reception over a medium common to various nodes. Since WSN comprises of a large number of nodes communicating with one another, it is essential to have an accurate MAC protocol to increase the WSN efficiency. This has caused a widespread research on designing an efficient MAC protocol [4]. An energy efficient MAC protocol enhances the lifespan of a sensor network to a larger extent by regulating the transceiver, which is a crucial energy consuming component. Abstract-Synchronized communication has recently emerged as a prime option for low-power critical applications. Solutions such as Glossy or Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) have demonstrated end-to-end reliability upwards of 99.99%. In this context, the IETF Working Group 6TiSCH is currently standardizing the mechanisms to use TSCH in low-power IPv6 scenarios. This paper identifies a number of challenges when it comes to implementing the 6TiSCH stack. It shows how these challenges can be addressed with practical solutions for locking, queuing, scheduling and other aspects.With this implementation as an enabler, we present an experimental validation and comparison with state-of-the-art MAC protocols. We conduct fine-grained energy profiling, showing the impact of link-layer security on packet transmission. We evaluate distributed time synchronization in a 340-node testbed, and demonstrate that tight synchronization (hundreds of microseconds) can be achieved at very low cost (0.3% duty cycle, 0.008% channel utilization). We finally compare TSCH against traditional MAC layers: low-power listening (LPL) and CSMA, in terms of reliability, latency and energy. We show that with proper scheduling, TSCH achieves by far the highest reliability, and outperforms LPL in both energy and latency.

Abstract-We propose a novel decentralized and self-learning framework to support both communication reliability and energyefficiency for periodic traffic applications in WSNs. Our autonomous framework comprises three main components: estimation and identification of multi-flow traffic, dynamic multi-flow wakeup scheduling, and asynchronous channel hopping. With asynchronous channel hopping the frequency hopping pattern is determined by each source node autonomously, and forwarders have to identify and follow the pattern. We also propose a light and efficient controller to eliminate the collision caused by multiflow overlap at forwarders. We present design and evaluation of our autonomous framework using real world measurements, and realistic trace-based simulation. The results show that our asynchronous channel hopping solution improves the packet reception rate compared to the single channel solutions without the need of an expensive signaling and time synchronization overhead. We also show that with this scheme the average energy consumption yields a ≈ 50% lower than the single channel solutions. This paper is to the best our knowledge, the first to explore channel hopping without maintaining a tight time synchronization protocol.
