Chaotic global analysis of heart rate variability following power spectral adjustments during exposure to traffic noise in healthy adult women

Abstract: Aim. Previous studies have described the substantial impact of different types of noise on the linear behaviour of heart rate variability (HRV). Yet, there are limited studies about the complexity or nonlinear dynamics of HRV during exposure to traffic noise. Here, we evaluated the complexity of HRV during traffic noise exposure via six power spectra and, when adjusted by the parameters of the Multi-Taper Method (MTM).Material and methods. We analysed 31 healthy female students between 18 and 30 years old. Sub… Show more

“…The MTM power spectrum is preferred and implemented as it has been established to statistically outperform several other power spectra (Alkan and Yilmaz 2007;Subasi 2007) when calculating chaotic global metrics (Garner et al 2020a(Garner et al , 2017. MTM (Ghil 1997) is advantageous for spectral estimation and signal reconstruction, of a time-series of a spectrum that may contain broadband and line components.…”

“…Thus, the statistical hazards in the application of one are potentially compensated by the others in the CFP1 to CFP7 combinations. This is standard procedure when assessing chaotic global metrics (Bernardo et al 2014;De Souza et al 2015;Garner et al 2022Garner et al , 2020aGarner et al , 2017.…”

“…Methods and materials were exactly as in the studies by Barreto et al [1] and Garner et al [28]. Typically, 20-25 min of RR-intervals is sufficient for chaotic global analysis [25,29,30]. In fact, ultra-short lengths (RR≈125) of data have been effective in obese youths [31].…”

“…In that case, spectral entropy and sDFA were calculated via the Welch power spectrum [14]. Later the high spectral alternatives which performed better were established and used in both forward [25,27,29] and mathematical inverse problems [11]. These are computed by implementing the MTM power spectrum throughout [1,25].…”
