Chaotic roll motions of ships in regular longitudinal waves

Abstract: Parametric resonance can lead to dangerously large rolling motions, endangering the ship, cargo and crew. The QR-factorization method for calculating (LCEs) Lyapunov Characteristic Exponents was introduced; parametric resonance stability of ships in longitudinal waves was then analyzed using LCEs. Then the safe and unsafe regions of target ships were then identified. The results showed that this method can be used to analyze ship stability and to accurately identify safe and unsafe operating conditions for a s… Show more

“…There are many algorithms that can calculate LCEs [7][8], in this paper, we adopted the method of reference [9] to calculate Lyapunov characteristic exponents, and analyze the stability of ship in regular longitudinal wave. QR-factorization is the fundamental solution of reference [9].The ship's parametric roll equation can be expressed as follows: is the ratio of frequency of encounter to natural frequency of roll, h is the amplitude of parametric excitation.…”

“…One approach is subjected to a stochastic analysis procedure, where the periodic excitation with a random noise disturbance is considered [21]. Some results are about the application of Lapunov Characteristic Exponents to parametric resonance stability of ships [22]. An interesting approach is given in [23].…”

“…Consequently, Ref. [14] studied the ship stability in stochastic longitudinal waves via multi scale method and obtained the maximal Lyapunov exponent of the system. Also, the safe basin was usually applied the chaotic behaviors in stochastic nonlinear ship motion [15][16][17].…”
